Red Cross Provides Shelter for Sailors Stranded Shore Side

April 1, 2008 · No Comments

The Naples Red Cross, in support with the Naval Support Activity Navy Base, was put on alert because of bad weather in the Mediterranean seas. The weather continued to worsen and the port was closed, leaving about 1,300 personnel on shore leave unable to return to their ships. The Naples Red Cross was asked to help in manning four shelters on two bases. The station manager sent out the alert and 12 DAT volunteers came forward to help. The Regional Command, Rear Admiral Groothousen, came to the Naples Red Cross office and thanked them personally for the support provided on the 15 hour operation.
